Amany Killawi, Co-founder of LaunchGood

“I am a social worker turned social entrepreneur. An avid reader and basketball player. Co-founder and COO of LaunchGood.

Launchgood is a crowdfunding platform to support Muslims launching good all over the world by helping them raise funds for their projects, campaigns, and creative ideas.

I used to be a youth organizer and I would often raise funds for youth programs. At some point, I realized with my co-founder Chris and Omar that there are 1.6 billion Muslims and over 400 niche crowdfunding sites but very few that focused on the Muslim community. Post college, I was feeling a bit burned out in the Muslim community, but I felt recharged when I explored the possibility of LaunchGood. It felt like we're so busy defending who Muslims, LaunchGood to me was the freedom to just build and inspire Muslims to aim higher, create, innovate, and launch amazing projects. So we set out to build the site and October 2015 we launched our first ever project: the first Muslim Womens' workout DVD!

Problems we faced when starting up? Everything you can think of! I remember the first version of our site was so bad that when you would donate the numbers would go down instead of up. I have all sorts of horror stories of website issues going wrong, people stealing ideas without credit, and everything in between!

We're an also bootstrapped company which means we have 0 investors! That means as a founder I had to go 3 years before I could pay myself. Although difficult, that wasn't the hardest part.
So many factors have to go right for you to succeed. The hardest part was keeping in mind all of those things like leading and growing a team, managing development, compliance, staying cash flow positive, business development and outreach, and of course, balancing family.

Each stage of our company had its own crazy set of challenges, but the first two years were the toughest because my co-founders and I had to do everything ourselves. We didn't have money to hire anyone else!

On advice: Have a growth mindset. When you're stuck between two paths to take, always go where you can grow. It's the best-guaranteed investment you can make on yourself. I didn't just wake up one day, saying I'd like to start a crowdfunding platform to empower Muslims. I just kept chasing growth and it led me to where I am today.”

Aklınıza gelebilecek her şey!

Çünkü kurucu ortağımla her şeyi kendimiz yapmamız gerekiyordu. Bir başkasını işe alacak paramız yoktu.
Önerim: Her zaman büyüme odaklı olun. İki seçenek arasında kaldığınızda daima gelişebileceğiniz tarafı seçin. Bu kendinize yapabileceğiniz en iyi yatırım. Ben bir sabah uyanıp Müslümanları destekleyecek bir fon platformu kuracağım demedim. Daima gelişimi takip ettim ve bugün buradayım.”

Efnan Ghoneam, Founder of Zerkubi

“My name is Efnan Ghoneam. I graduated from faculty of education and worked as a teacher for 4 years. I was a teacher but my mind was occupied elsewhere: I wanted to start my own jewelry company. I’ve always been into jewelry and since both my sister and my cousin work in the jewelry industry, my entrepreneurship journey began designing with them as a hobby and starting a page on social media (Yıldız Takı Tasarım) in 2013. When I first started, I was a full-time school teacher and working with jewelry on the side as a hobby. I wanted to start my business but quitting my job and making jewelry wasn't an option or a good decision according to the people around me. Having a university degree suddenly become something that was holding me back rather than pushing me to succeed. I couldn't focus on the things I wanted to do, due to social pressure. Things changed after I got married, I quit my job and had my baby. I put my all efforts into my business. I didn't have peop...

İclal Çapoğlu & Saliha İclal Günergök, Founders of Artlesstudio

“We met at an art school entrance exam. Our paths crossed again and since we were both on the same wave length and had similar big ambitions, we got on really well. One day, while we were walking in Gülhane Park, we found ourselves planning our workshops after İclal said: "Why don't we start workshops together?" Both of us loved painting, so how amazing would it be if we could both share our passion with others? Normally, when taking steps into a road we're not familiar with, people tend to step back to protect themselves from the unknown. But we wanted to move on and we could already see this working. We didn't overthink and announced our first workshop. We got enough submissions for three workshops which was beyond our dreams. Our excitement fueled the motivation and energy to create the Artlesstudio. In the beginning, we hosted our workshops in cafes. We were looking for the next place all the time. After a while, it started to get harder to have them in ...

Suna Tufan, Founder of Sahhane Restaurants

“I was born in Konya, Turkey in 1976. I studied Business and Theology at university. After graduation, I worked in different companies, both Turkish and international. When I had my children I stopped working and I devoted myself to raising them. In 2007, I started my first business, Şahhane Restaurant in Ankara. One of the biggest motives behind starting the restaurant is the fact that I wanted a non-alcoholic place for conservative people where they could have a good time with their family accompanied with live music. I personally thought there was a need for such a place, after a while we had to change our concept since the demand was low. Now we're serving in a hall where people hold ceremonies like weddings and graduations. After becoming successful, we opened another branch again in Ankara. In addition to my restaurants, I'm also managing a gas station which was left to me from my dad. I wasn't wearing the hijab before 2007, that’s the same year I turned back t...
