İclal Çapoğlu & Saliha İclal Günergök, Founders of Artlesstudio

“We met at an art school entrance exam. Our paths crossed again and since we were both on the same wave length and had similar big ambitions, we got on really well. One day, while we were walking in Gülhane Park, we found ourselves planning our workshops after İclal said: "Why don't we start workshops together?" Both of us loved painting, so how amazing would it be if we could both share our passion with others?

Normally, when taking steps into a road we're not familiar with, people tend to step back to protect themselves from the unknown. But we wanted to move on and we could already see this working. We didn't overthink and announced our first workshop. We got enough submissions for three workshops which was beyond our dreams. Our excitement fueled the motivation and energy to create the Artlesstudio.

In the beginning, we hosted our workshops in cafes. We were looking for the next place all the time. After a while, it started to get harder to have them in cafes. Soon later though, we were thinking about what color we should paint the walls of our studio in Sultanahmet! It all works out.

Since we're still students in art school, there are always people who say we can't. We decided to block out negative thoughts and because of this, we didn't have any issues.
We found ourselves lucky since we started together, there was two of us. When one of us is down, the other can pick up and motive.

Both of us are art students in the beginning of our journey. We’re currently focusing on university but also trying to expand our business and reach more people.

To those interested in art but think it’s too late to get into it: it’s never too late! Painting is hard work and you’re improving yourself day-by-day. We also want to add that those who are not afraid to try, patience naturally becomes your sidekick. It takes effort and patience but it’s so worth it. Don't delay becoming the person you want to be.”

Shahida Kola, Founder of 121 Tuition

“I am 34 years old, born in the UK, mother of 4 beautiful children and I run a successful tuition company (121 Tuition). From a young age I have always wanted to work with children; this passion grew stronger as I got older. I studied hard whilst taking care of my 4 young children. In 2008, after completing my studies, I knew it would be a while before I would apply for a teaching job in a school, so I decided that whilst my children were still young, I could offer private tuition. I designed some leaflets myself,  which were very basic as I did not have much to put into the business at that time. Within the first week of posting the leaflets around the area I was overwhelmed with the number of calls I received. The intention of teaching a few students actually turned out to be the initial number of 59 students. I worked from a large room in my home,, which I converted into a classroom. I continued at my home for a year and employed my first member of staff. 121 Tuition had m...

Suna Tufan, Founder of Sahhane Restaurants

“I was born in Konya, Turkey in 1976. I studied Business and Theology at university. After graduation, I worked in different companies, both Turkish and international. When I had my children I stopped working and I devoted myself to raising them. In 2007, I started my first business, Şahhane Restaurant in Ankara. One of the biggest motives behind starting the restaurant is the fact that I wanted a non-alcoholic place for conservative people where they could have a good time with their family accompanied with live music. I personally thought there was a need for such a place, after a while we had to change our concept since the demand was low. Now we're serving in a hall where people hold ceremonies like weddings and graduations. After becoming successful, we opened another branch again in Ankara. In addition to my restaurants, I'm also managing a gas station which was left to me from my dad. I wasn't wearing the hijab before 2007, that’s the same year I turned back t...

Efnan Ghoneam, Founder of Zerkubi

“My name is Efnan Ghoneam. I graduated from faculty of education and worked as a teacher for 4 years. I was a teacher but my mind was occupied elsewhere: I wanted to start my own jewelry company. I’ve always been into jewelry and since both my sister and my cousin work in the jewelry industry, my entrepreneurship journey began designing with them as a hobby and starting a page on social media (Yıldız Takı Tasarım) in 2013. When I first started, I was a full-time school teacher and working with jewelry on the side as a hobby. I wanted to start my business but quitting my job and making jewelry wasn't an option or a good decision according to the people around me. Having a university degree suddenly become something that was holding me back rather than pushing me to succeed. I couldn't focus on the things I wanted to do, due to social pressure. Things changed after I got married, I quit my job and had my baby. I put my all efforts into my business. I didn't have peop...
